asallamu allaykum dear sister Muslema,
I am a sister and have been wondering about the question of women teaching a general audience.
Personally, I see benefits in a women teaching a general audience that a man will not be able to express perhaps. Also, a woman teacher gets the attention of women towards conferences and Islamic talks that might otherwise be presented by brothers and shaykhs only.
After a discussion with a shaykha at the masjid she told me that this is not the ways of the sahabiyat and so we are not supposed to do this. Hence, the way it should be is that men teach men and women teach women.
I am wondering if there are different opinions on this matter, and I ask you to kindly tell us what the Islamic system says about this.
Jazakillah khair wasallamu allaykum

Assalamu Alaikum Sister Khadijah,
This is an excellent question, and yes there is a difference of opinion on this matter.
For example, before I started to teach publicly, I asked a number of shuyukh and scholars.
